What are green occupations?

Green occupations and the occupational standards that describe them form the basis of apprenticeships and technical qualifications. Occupations have been categorised as mid and dark green via a leaf icon. This indicates the impact the occupation has in helping the UK achieve net-carbon zero by 2050.

Dark-green occupation
A dark-green occupation, for example wind turbine engineer, is embedded within the green occupational landscape and is delivering sustainable outcomes.

Examples of other dark green occupations:

  • junior energy manager
  • dual fuel smart meter installer
  • sustainability business specialist

Mid-green occupation
A mid-green occupation will remain the same but there might be a need for new knowledge, skills and behaviours to be embedded to enable the use of new technologies and approaches.

For example, an engineer using basic engineering principles, will likely be expected to move away from petrol and carbon-based technologies to alternative technologies and approaches over time.

Examples of other mid-green occupations:

  • transport planner
  • procurement assistant
  • product design and development engineer

What is a green theme?

IfATE has approved a range of occupations which affect the sustainability net zero agenda in various ways.

The green theme maps help show the range of green occupations available. These themes came from the Green Job Taskforce report, where sectors were prioritised, as change is crucial to meeting net zero. IfATE has grouped occupations into themes to align with key areas of interest in the net carbon agenda.

How do I find the green theme maps?

On the landing page, below the guidance area, you will find the link to the green theme maps.

By selecting a theme to display, you will quickly be able to identify all the occupations relevant to a particular green theme that might be of interest.

Once you have selected a theme to display you can see all the occupations that have been mapped to it.

Along the top, you will find links to occupations mapped to the overarching theme and the bulleted sub themes.

What are Royal apprenticeships?

An initial six green apprenticeships have been hand-picked by industry experts. They have been marked with a crown icon to celebrate the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III.

These apprenticeships have been selected because they contribute to a low-carbon economy. They help to build a workforce that is equipped with the skills needed for a green future.

They also reflect the King’s commitment to sustainability and environmental causes.
